Minister Shahin Urges Italy to Reinstate Funding for UNRWA

15/05/2024 - Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, met today with the Italian Consul General, Mr. Domenico Bellato, She urged Italy to reconsider its decision to halt funding for UNRWA, highlighting the agency's vital role in providing humanitarian aid, especially in Gaza amidst ongoing Israeli aggression. Shahin emphasized the severe humanitarian crisis and escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

She called on Italy to pressure Israel to stop its aggression and recognize the State of Palestine as a step towards peace. Shahin appreciated Italy's humanitarian efforts in Gaza, including the "Food for Gaza" initiative and medical treatment for injured Palestinians in Italy. She stressed the need for regular bilateral consultations and the activation of the joint governmental committee to strengthen relations.

Consul General Bellato reaffirmed Italy's support for the two-state solution, international efforts to protect civilians, and ongoing humanitarian aid to Gaza, emphasizing the importance of enhancing bilateral relations.
