Minister Shahin Praises African Union’s Support for the Palestinian Cause
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates,Varsen Shahin , met on Monday with H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Chairperson of the African Union Commission, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, with the participation of the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Ethiopia and Permanent Observer to the AU, Fares Qubb’a.
At the start of the meeting, Minister Shahin expressed appreciation for the African Union’s principled and consistent positions in support of the Palestinian cause, highlighting the significance of this visit, her first to the African continent , beginning with the AU.
She briefed the Chairperson on the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza resulting from the ongoing war, and on the escalating violations committed by Israel in the West Bank, including settlement expansion, settler violence, and policies of apartheid imposed on the Palestinian people. She emphasized the need to mobilize international and African support to implement international law, UN resolutions, and achieve the two-state solution.
For his part, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf welcomed the Minister, describing the visit as historic and reaffirming the AU’s full and unwavering support for Palestine. He condemned the genocide in Gaza, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom and self-determination.
He also confirmed the African Union’s continued support for UNRWA and its readiness to participate in Gaza reconstruction efforts, technically and humanitarianly, reiterating the Union’s firm commitment to the two-state solution.
