Minister Shaheen Addresses Palestine Solidarity Day in Sweden
Sweden, November 30th, 2024- Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, delivered a powerful speech on behalf of the State of Palestine during an event commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The event was organized by the Friends of Palestine Association, the Palestinian Embassy in Sweden, and the Faith and Solidarity Organization of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, with participation from party members.
Dr. Shahin highlighted the significance of global solidarity movements, which have surged in response to the ongoing genocide, displacement, and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against Palestinians, particularly in Gaza. She condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war and drew attention to the continuous crimes in the occupied Palestinian Territory including East Jerusalem, such as annexation, illegal settlements, and creeping land seizures.
Minister Shahin underscored the necessity of sustained international pressure, both official and grassroots, to immediately halt the atrocities, implement UN Security Council Resolution 2735, and operationalize the UN General Assembly resolution endorsing the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion. She emphasized the importance of translating the global consensus on the two-state solution into concrete measures to safeguard its viability.
Dr. Shahin called for the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state and its full UN membership, stressing the need for unwavering international commitment to upholding international court rulings.
As part of her visit to Sweden, Dr. Shahin met with officials from the Swedish Development and Aid Organization to address the ongoing genocide and Israeli war crimes in Palestine. The Minister called for urgent international action to uphold international law, immediately end these atrocities, and implement binding measures to enforce UNSC Resolution 2735 and the ICJ-endorsed UN resolution.
