Minister Dr Malki Meets the New Commissioner-General of UNRWA.

Ramallah - The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Riad Malki, today, met at the Ministry’s headquarters in Ramallah, Mr Philip Lazarini, the new Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Minister Malki welcomed the new Commissioner-General for his duties as Commissioner-General "UNRWA", stressing the need to ensure that UNRWA can continue to provide services to Palestinian refugees inside and outside the country, and work to improve the services provided to them. Especially in light of the difficult circumstances that the world is going through in facing of Corona pandemic.

Minister Malki called on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards UNRWA, stressing the need for the international community to provide financial support to the agency to maintain the continued provision of its services to Palestinian refugees, as the Minister Malki referred to the Israeli-American attempts to obstruct the agency's work and attempts to liquidate it in a first step to end the refugee file.

The Minister reviewed the efforts of the Palestinian leadership in mobilizing international support to confront UNRWA's financial hardship. The guest was also provided with a depiction of the Palestinian government's efforts to confront the Corona epidemic.

Minister Malki expressed his concern about the UNRWA schools in Jerusalem and the need to continue their work and encourage parents to send their children to those schools that have high academic levels.

From his side, Mr Lazarini affirmed UNRWA's keenness to continue providing services to Palestinian refugees despite the suffocating financial crisis facing it, and he called upon the donors to provide financial support to UNRWA so that it can continue to carry out its duties towards the Palestinian refugees.

The Minister and Commissioner-General of UNRWA agreed to continue the joint effort, especially in the coming stage, and to encourage countries to participate effectively in the donor countries' meeting next month.

The meeting was attended by UNRWA and the Commissioner-General Gwen Lewis, Director of UNRWA Operations in the West Bank, and Kazem Abu Khalaf, Advisor to the Director of Operations for Political and Local Affairs, while on the side of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Omar Awadallah from the Multilateral Relations Sector attended, the director of the protocol unit, Abeer Al-Ramahi, and the media director, Tareq Eida.
