On the 75th anniversary commentating the end of the Second World War, and during this unprecedented global crisis, the State of Palestine reiterates its steadfast commitment to Multilateralism and the rules-based international order.  The end of the Second World War gave birth to the current Multilateral system, exemplified in the United Nations Charter and the principles of international peace and security and human rights for everyone.

These perilous times stand as a test of the moral rectitude and determination of the international community to uphold the merits of the post-war order and maintain the main principles of the United Nations Charter, including the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity of any State. Indeed, the prohibition on the use of force remains the most fundamental principle of the post-war era and the international legal regime of peace. Drawing from the lessons of the Second World War, the international community unequivocally outlawed the acquisition of territory by force, making conquests, once common, a shameful part of history that generated conflicts and insurmountable human suffering.

Discarding the legal principles that have underpinned this modern international order, Israel, the occupying power, actively facilitated by the United States, is planning to annex parts of the territory of the State of Palestine on 1 July 2020. Such dangerous and unilateral decision violates the basic principles of international law, including the tens of United Nations Resolutions, and the Multilateral system that the international community put in place and protected for seven decades.

With unabated settlement expansion, systematic forcible displacement, continued threats of annexation, worsening humanitarian conditions, and insidious unilateral decisions, the Palestinian people find themselves facing inordinate threats to their existence, livelihood, and their right to self-determination.  Such grave violations of international law demand a responsible global and multilateral leadership to defy such an isolationist politics that sees the Multilateral system as a zero-sum game.

It is time for the international community to hold Israel, the occupying power, accountable for its illegal actions. The State of Palestine calls on the international community to ban settlement products, review its existing agreements with Israel, and compel Israel to end its occupation of the State of Palestine. The international community should support the State of Palestine’s diplomatic and legal endeavors, including the ongoing Situation in the State of Palestine at the International Criminal Court.

To honor the memory of the millions of victims who lost their lives during the Second World War, the State of Palestine calls on the international community to renew its commitment to the rule of law and call on Israel to immediately and completely cease any plans of annexation. Finally, the State of Palestine calls on the international community to restore hope, protect the main principles of international law order, and preserve the survival, identity, and dignity of humanity.
