The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomes Jamaica's decision to recognize the State of Palestine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomes the decision of Jamaica to recognize the State of Palestine and commends it for joining the international efforts calling for the effective implementation of the two-state solution, as well as for the respect of the Palestinian people's right to live in dignity and freedom in their Independent State.

It also welcomes the statements made by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, The Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, during her announcement of her country's decision, in which she called for all countries to adhere to diplomatic solutions in accordance with international law instead of military solutions, and called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip; stressing on the importance of intensifying all efforts to deliver humanitarian aid, especially to the many women and children who are suffering daily.

This position is consistent with Jamaica's strong commitment to the principles enshrined by the United Nations Charter, which call for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence amongst nations, as well as for the right of all peoples to self-determination. It also confirms the urgent need for countries to come together to take actual steps to restore the credibility of a rules-based international order, where no people remain deprived of their basic rights.

In this context, the Ministry reiterates its call on all countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to do so as soon as possible, in order to confirm the international community’s true determination to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, and support them in meeting their legitimate aspirations.
