Foreign Ministry calls on states, international community to act to stop genocide and famine in Gaza before it’s too late
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates called on all states and the international community, led by the United Nations Security Council, to treat with utmost seriousness the report issued by the International Food Security Classification (IPC), the first globally recognized authoritative study confirming famine in the Gaza Strip according to UN standards, as well as the statement issued by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the findings of the report.
In a statement issued today, the ministry commended the report and the efforts behind it, highlighting its concern for human dignity, and called for decisive international action to compel the occupying state, Israel, to immediately halt the crimes of genocide, displacement, and annexation, as the only way to stop, contain, and address famine, prevent its spread, ensure the opening of crossings, allow sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid, and begin the immediate reconstruction of Gaza.
The ministry also urged relevant international courts to assume their legal and moral responsibilities regarding the perpetrators of famine, including upholding international law in addressing all acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people witnessed by the world.
The ministry affirmed that the IPC report has left no room for interpretation and speculation regarding the occurrence of famine in Gaza. It stressed that urgent deployment of international leverage in all its forms is now required to stop the famine immediately and end the aggression against the Palestinian people.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the results of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis were not a mystery – “it is a man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself.”
“Famine is not only about food; it is the deliberate collapse of the systems needed for human survival,” he said.
“As the occupying power, Israel has unequivocal obligations under international law – including the duty of ensuring food and medical supplies for the population. We cannot allow this situation to continue with impunity,” said the UN chief.
"No more excuses. The time for action is not tomorrow -- it is now. We need an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, and full, unfettered humanitarian access," said the UN Secretary-General.
