Minister Shahin Leads Exceptional Ceremony in Addis Ababa Marking International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Varsen Shahin, participated on Tuesday in an exceptional official ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters in Addis Ababa to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The event witnessed broad diplomatic presence, including Palestine’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Fares Al-Qabb, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, accredited ambassadors to Ethiopia, as well as representatives from the African Union and the United Nations.
The ceremony opened with a keynote speech by Minister Shahin, who emphasized that solidarity with Palestine is both a moral and legal responsibility aimed at ensuring justice for the Palestinian people. She underscored that support must translate into enabling Palestinians to obtain their rights as guaranteed under international law, and to remain steadfast on their land in the face of ongoing policies of displacement. Shahin further noted that this occasion reflects the international community’s enduring commitment to Palestine and confirms that the Palestinian cause remains at the heart of global conscience.
Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, delivered a solidarity statement reaffirming the AU’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights. He reiterated the Union’s backing of a just and comprehensive peace process that ensures independence and the right to self-determination. Additional statements were delivered by several diplomats, all stressing the importance of sustaining the ceasefire in Gaza, ensuring humanitarian access, rejecting displacement plans, and supporting Palestinian resilience.
During the event, ambassadors of countries that recently recognized the State of Palestine were honored in appreciation of their principled stance; reflecting growing international recognition and support for Palestinian rights. The ceremony concluded with the raising of the Palestinian flag at the UN headquarters in Addis Ababa, in a symbolic moment expressing collective solidarity and hope for freedom and independence.
