Foreign minister hands over legal file on Palestinian maritime borders to Arab League chief

Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki handed over today a legal file on the maritime borders of Palestine to Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

"This matter is important because it establishes the legal status of the State of Palestine and enhances its position in the world in terms of demarcation of maritime borders," al-Malki told WAFA following a meeting with Aboul Gheit at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

The letter was adopted by the State of Palestine to demarcate those borders to consolidate the legal status and enhance the status of the State of Palestine globally.

He pointed out that the Palestinian mission to the United Nations deposited copies of these maps at the United Nations and asked to circulate them to all member states.

"This is why we came to the Arab League to provide the Secretary General with a copies of these maps and requested they would be circulated to the member states to help us in our endeavors to demarcate the maritime borders, especially with regard to the exclusive economic zone, in which the State of Palestine has the right to invest and explore," he added.

Al-Malki noted that he discussed with Aboul Gheit the recent speech of President Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations, the issue of Palestinian elections and the latest developments in the Palestinian territories.
