press release

28-04-2021 - Ramallah - The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, Dr. Riad Malki  held an official virtual meeting this afternoon with his counterpart from the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Hugh Todd, where they discussed various topics of mutual concern, and prospects to develop bilateral relations between both countries.

Minister Malki gave a thorough briefing on the preparations that have been taking place for months in Palestine to hold parliamentary elections, and Israel's attempts to disrupt them, especially in occupied East Jerusalem. He also referred to Palestinian diplomatic efforts aimed at pressuring Israel to hold elections in East Jerusalem, stating the Palestinian position regarding Jerusalem and its refusal to abide by any Israeli pressures aiming to create a de facto Israeli control over the entire city, and depriving Palestinians from exercising sovereignty over their capital.

Both Ministers also engaged in discussions regarding the efforts made by their respective governments to provide the necessary vaccination for their peoples in face of the COVID 19 pandemic, both emphasizing on the importance of solidarity and cooperation amongst states to provide vaccination to all countries, regardless of their economic and financial capabilities.

Speaking on bilateral relations, Malki expressed Palestine’s commitment towards these relations.  Given that both are member states at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Palestine can assist in implementing technical assistance financed by the Islamic Bank, in the fields of agriculture and health, through the Palestinian International Cooperation Agency "PICA". It can also help organize an exchange of visits between the business communities from both countries to discuss cooperation prospects.

Minister Malki also extended a cordial invitation to his counterpart during the meeting to visit the holy Palestinian city of Bethlehem during the Christmas season, in which Minister Todd accepted.

From his part, Minister Todd affirmed his country's position in support of Palestine and its commitment  towards the two-state solution, praising the bilateral relations and expressing his country’s commitment to further strengthening and developing them. He also reiterated Guyana’s support to Palestine on the multilateral level, and that Palestinians can always count on their support wherever needed.

Minister Todd also gave a briefing on the current situation in the Esequibo, and Guyana’s steps at raising this file to the International Court of Justice.

In this regard, Minister Malki reaffirmed that the State of Palestine remains a strong friend to both, Guyana and Venezuela, and within its capacity, is always ready to engage in a mediating role between both parties, if deemed feasible, to help resolve this dispute.
